Start with a clearly defined period
Decide whether you are planning for a semester, an academic year, or the full qualification. Count the months you will actually pay for housing and daily life, including breaks if you will stay in the destination. A nine-month teaching year does not necessarily mean nine months of rent.
Use one currency throughout your calculation. If you convert a quote, record the exchange rate and date, and leave room for transfer charges and exchange-rate changes. Uni Listing's calculator uses your inputs; it is not a live currency converter or an official fee quote.
Separate recurring and one-off costs
Find the tuition fee for your exact course, student status, intake, and academic year. Ask whether later years may cost more and whether compulsory laboratory, placement, materials, or student-services charges are separate.
For living costs, estimate accommodation, utilities, food, transport, phone, and personal expenses. Then add one-off items such as applications, language tests, document translations, visa charges, insurance, flights, and initial setup. Include a housing deposit in the cash you need even when it may later be refundable.
Distinguish funding from hoped-for income
Use confirmed savings, committed support, and awarded funding for your base plan. Keep scholarships you have only applied for and possible part-time earnings in separate scenarios. Work availability, permitted hours, tax, and study demands can all change the amount you receive.
Make three versions: your expected budget, a higher-cost version, and a plan for delayed funding. Choose a contingency you can explain rather than assuming a universal percentage fits every destination. A planning estimate also differs from any financial evidence required for a visa.
Check when the money is due
A course can be affordable overall and still require more cash up front than you have. Map deposits, tuition instalments, accommodation payments, travel, and scholarship disbursements on a timeline. Read cancellation and refund terms before paying.
Revisit the budget when you receive an offer, confirm housing, or book travel. Keep official quotes and avoid sending money using payment instructions that cannot be verified through the institution's own website.
